Negros is situated between Cebu and Panay in the southwest of the Visayas. Negros belongs to the Visayas island group, (the major islands of the Visayas are Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, and Samar). Negros is the sugar island of the Philippines, almost half of the total land area is used for growing sugar cane.
Absolutely unique in Negros are the old steam locomotives, most of which were used in the harvest in the sugar fields until recently. The island natives are called Negritos. Some of these cultural minority groups are still living in the mountain regions.
