The volcanic Galapagos archipelago is located in one of the most active oceanic volcanic regions on earth. The Galapagos Islands, volcanic in origin, are located about 1,000 km (620 miles) from Ecuador mainland in the Pacific Ocean. The islands are geologically young and famous for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin. Visiting Galapagos, Charles Darwin developed his then groundbreaking theory of the evolution of species.

The archipelago consists of 13 major islands, of which 5 are inhabited. Almost the entire area is now national park, which attracts nature lovers and wildlife photographers from around the world. The Galapagos Island's interesting volcanic geology, as well as its rich terrestrial flora and fauna will take your breath away. Some volcanoes still active.

A trip to the Galapagos Island is the journey of a lifetime. Be surprised by a unique diverse eco-system and a biological marine reserve which are unique on this planet.
The Galapagos Islands are famous for its endemic species, which live on the island without disturbance. The animals in their natural habitat have any fear of people, which is fascinating and must be respected by all visitors.

During land visits you can admire a huge variety of animals, many of them exist only on the Galapagos Islands: Marine Iguanas, Galapagos Land Iguanas, Galapagos Giant Tortoise, Galapagos Green Turtle, Sea lions, Penguins, Pelicans, Lizards and uncountable species of seabirds, for example the Blue-footed and Red-footed Boobies, Albatrosses and Flamingos.

Land excursion during a liveaboards cruise are very limited to none, for this reason we definitely recommend to plan some extra time before or after your dive cruise if you wish to explore the land attractions as well. In Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island is the Charles Darwin Research Station which is definitely worth a visit.
