Uepi Island Resort has its own dive center, right next to the resort. The dive center is a SSI facility. They can do SSI dive training. Peter Mara, along with Resort Managers Jill and Grant Kelly are Uepi's resident dive instructors. In 1993 the resort owners trained the first two Solomon Islands dive instructors Dick and Wilson.
Dive Center and Service
Dive training is available. Those who want to get certified as Open Water divers can now study your academic lessons before you come to Uepi Island Resort using the SSI Home Study Program on-line. Dive gear is available for hire. The local dive guides will accompany all divers on their dives.
Due to its remote location, Uepi does insist that all divers have adequate evacuation insurance, such as the one offered through a DAN membership. For more details, please refer to the Insurance section on our website.
Dive area
Marovo Lagoon in the New Georgia Island group is spectacular. Reputedly the longest saltwater lagoon in the world, it is nominated for World Heritage listing and described by James A Michener as "the eighth wonder of the world. With its idyllic Pacific Island setting, Uepi Island Resort is the place to be if you want to dive Marovo Lagoon land-based. There are amazing walls that drop-off to 2000 m (6500 ft) on the ocean side with the some of the best coastal diving we have experienced in this part of the world!
Rarely will you view such high concentration of fish, sponges and corals. You dive in a diverse environment, ranging from coral gardens to vertical drop-offs of over 600 m (1950 ft). Do you want to see big fish? This is your place. If you are after rare tropical marine critters - you'll find them here too. Depending on the currents, you can do some thrilling drift dives or just stay stationary at one of the deep points, attach your reef hook and watch the food chain in front of you. The dive sites are all nearby, 5 to 10 minutes by dive boat. Further afield dive sites are also available. Dives usually take place at 9am, 2pm and a night dive is also on offer.
